What Five Film Production Houses Taught Us About Building for Filmmakers

Over the years, we’ve built sites for five Indian production companies — Light Bulb Motion Picture, Flying Horse Motion Pictures, Mindfilms India, DDOC Films, and Spunk Productions. Different scales, different specialities — feature films, documentaries, commercials, digital work — but the same core problem showed up every time.

The problem is always speed versus quality

A production house’s website exists mostly to be watched, not read. That means video, and video is exactly what makes websites slow. Every one of these projects came down to the same tension: show the work at its best quality, without making a producer or casting director wait for it to load.

The solutions varied by scale. DDOC Films runs as a single-page microsite with built-in video playback, kept fast by design. Spunk Productions embeds directly from YouTube rather than hosting heavy files locally. Light Bulb Motion Picture built a dedicated showreel page, treating video as the centrepiece rather than an afterthought bolted onto a text-heavy homepage.

The work has to lead

Across all five, the instinct to add more — more animation, more text, more navigation depth — kept losing to a simpler rule: get out of the way of the reel. Flying Horse Motion Pictures wanted the site to carry some of filmmaking’s own drama, and the way to do that wasn’t more design, it was less friction between a visitor and the actual footage.

A production house website’s job is to disappear the moment someone presses play.

People matter as much as projects

Directors and founders show up prominently across all five sites — not as an afterthought “About” page, but as real content. Light Bulb Motion Picture gives each of its five directors their own profile. Mindfilms India has a dedicated director page alongside its project showcase. Flying Horse’s founder, Sparsh Sharma, and his creative vision anchor the site’s whole story. For a business built on relationships and reputation, that’s not incidental — it’s often the deciding factor for someone choosing who to work with.

What this means if you run a production house

The website doesn’t need to be complicated. It needs to load fast, put your best work in front of visitors with nothing in the way, and let the people behind the camera be visible. Everything else is optional.
